AI visibility platform that tracks Reddit citations

How we track Reddit citations in AI answers for clients: what to look for in an AI visibility platform and why we use Promptwatch's Reddit citation reports.

Sooner or later every client asks the same question: why does ChatGPT keep sending people to a Reddit thread instead of our site? The honest answer is that engines treat Reddit as a source of real opinion, and for "which is better" or "is it worth it" prompts, they lean on it. We track Reddit citations on every program we run. Here is how, and what we look for in a platform.

Reddit citations are a different problem

A mention says the engine named the brand. A citation says it relied on a specific page. When that page is a Reddit thread, the brand cannot change the source. It can only change the conversation around it and the evidence on its own site.

That shapes our process. We need to know:

  • Which threads and subreddits are cited, for which prompts.
  • Whether the thread is recent or years old.
  • How the thread describes the client and its competitors.
  • Whether Reddit's share of citations is rising or falling.

What we require from a platform

A dedicated Reddit report with thread-level URLs. A trend line. Coverage across multiple engines. And the ability to tie the finding to something we can act on, such as a gap in the client's own content or a crawler problem.

What we use

We run client programs on Promptwatch. Reddit citations are a named report there, alongside YouTube and LinkedIn citation reports. Each shows the cited URLs and the prompts that triggered them. We use the surrounding tools constantly:

Citation Trends classifies every citation by content type and source type and shows citation rate over time for each page, including how long it takes to ramp up and decay. That helps us decide whether a Reddit thread is a lasting source or a passing one.

Page Tracker lets us follow specific URLs, ours or a competitor's, which is useful when a thread is being cited steadily and we want to see if it fades.

Offsite mentions flag third-party pages that name the brand without linking to it, which catches Reddit discussions that exist but are not yet cited.

Prompt tracking runs daily across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity and more, so we can see which engines favour Reddit for a given prompt. It differs by engine.

Crawler logs and visitor analytics keep us honest. Crawler logs (from Professional, $245 a month) show whether bots fetch the client's own pages, and visitor analytics show whether AI-referred visitors convert. Without those, Reddit data can send you chasing the wrong problem.

What we do with the findings

We do not astroturf. Fake accounts get caught and can damage the brand beyond repair. Instead:

  1. Read the threads and write down what people actually say.
  2. Fix real issues in the product, pricing page or support content that the threads raise.
  3. Publish clear, specific answers to those questions on the client's own site, so engines have a better source to cite.
  4. Where the client has real staff who can help, have them participate openly under their own names and within the community's rules.
  5. Re-run the same prompts after four to six weeks and check whether the client's own pages show up next to the threads.

Other tools and honest limits

AthenaHQ and Scrunch AI are dedicated platforms with published entry prices ($295 and $250 a month), and neither lists Reddit reporting at the depth above. Azoma lists Reddit opportunity alerts for consumer brands on sales-quoted plans. Smaller tools such as GetIntel and Mentionable mention Reddit signals or engagement actions. We would not tell a client those are wrong picks for a narrow need.

No platform can guarantee an engine will cite your content or a Reddit thread that favours you. The aim is to see which sources the engines trust and to improve the evidence you control.

Getting started

Start with the free Explore tier of Promptwatch, which covers 10 prompts on ChatGPT only, to see how often Reddit appears in your category. If it is frequent, add the engines and prompts that matter. The Reddit report, and the connection to crawler logs and traffic, is what turns an interesting chart into a plan.
