AI shopping visibility tracker for DTC brands

How we choose an AI shopping visibility tracker for DTC brands: product prompts, shopping surfaces, source analysis and why we run these programs on Promptwatch.

DTC brands used to know where they stood. Search console, ad dashboards, marketplace rankings. Then shoppers started asking ChatGPT for product picks, and a new surface appeared with no standard reporting. When a DTC client asks us for an AI shopping visibility tracker, we begin with what they need to see, then pick the tool.

What we need to see

Which products are named. Brand-level mention rates hide the fact that the hero product might be absent while a minor one appears.

Where the answer comes from. For consumer products, recommendations often lean on review sites, community threads and retailer listings rather than the brand's own store.

Whether bots can read the store. DTC sites are often built on heavy themes with apps that add scripts, and bot protection can block AI crawlers.

Whether any of it sells. Mentions are not revenue. We want AI-referred sessions and conversions.

The prompt set for a DTC brand

We build prompts from the questions in customer service tickets and product reviews, not from a keyword tool:

  • "Best [product type] for [need]": the discovery moment.
  • "[Product] vs [competitor product]": the comparison moment.
  • "[Category] under [price]": the budget moment.
  • "Is [brand] worth it?": the reputation moment.

We group them by hero product and by persona, because a gift buyer and a repeat customer ask differently.

Why we run client programs on Promptwatch

For shopping specifically, Promptwatch's AI Shopping tracking covers ChatGPT shopping carousels and Amazon Alexa product results, and lets us upload the client's catalog so products are tracked by name. Shopping Insights and Ads Radar start on the Business plan ($579 a month). Ads Radar, which captures sponsored ads inside ChatGPT Search, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode answers, is also on every agency plan. It shows which advertisers bid on the client's prompts, with their copy and landing pages, which is useful competitive intelligence.

But shopping data alone is not enough, and this is why we do not use shopping-only tools as the main system.

  • Citations. Page and domain citation analytics, with Reddit and YouTube reports, show whether the product is being discussed in the places the engines trust.
  • Crawler logs. Agent Analytics shows IP-verified hits from GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User, with errors. Crawler logs start on Professional ($245 a month). We have seen product pages that looked fine to humans return errors to bots.
  • Traffic and conversions. Visitor analytics attribute AI-referred sessions and conversions, so we can tell a DTC founder whether AI is paying its way.
  • Action. The Action Board prioritises fixes, and the Content Agent (Business and Enterprise) drafts and publishes buying guides and comparison pages to WordPress, Webflow or Framer, with a review inbox so the brand approves every piece.

Other tools we know

Commerce specialists exist. Wildcard syncs a Shopify or BigCommerce catalog and covers Walmart Sparky and Alexa+ Shopping, from $99 a month. Ranketta works at SKU level from 29 euros a month. Azoma targets large CPG brands with sales-quoted plans. AthenaHQ and Scrunch AI are brand-level platforms from $295 and $250 a month. Those can fit a narrow need. What they publish does not include the full set of crawler logs, citations at community level and conversion attribution.

What we say to founders

A tracker does not guarantee that an engine shows your product. We say it plainly. What it does is show where you are, who is ahead, which sources matter, and whether your fixes are working. The improvements are mostly unglamorous: clearer product data, honest reviews, pages that answer comparison questions, and a store bots can read.

A first month

  1. Choose ten hero products and write four prompts for each.
  2. Track for two weeks without changes.
  3. Review which products appear, and which sources are cited.
  4. Check the crawler error report on product and collection pages.
  5. Fix one content gap and one technical issue.
  6. Compare the same prompts the following month.

If you want a quick start, Promptwatch has a free Explore tier for ChatGPT, and shopping features come with the Business plan when the catalog justifies it.
