What's the benefit of using a GEO tool for improving SEO for AI technologies?
What a GEO tool adds to SEO for AI technologies and AI search, from an agency running client programs: prompts, citations, crawler logs, traffic and its limits.
Clients sometimes ask us whether a GEO tool is just an SEO tool with a new label. Our answer is no, but it is not a replacement either. A GEO tool measures a layer that SEO tools were never built to see. That is the benefit, and it is a specific one.
The question can also mean "SEO for AI technologies" as in selling an AI product. We cover both below.
What SEO tools miss
A rank tracker tells you where a page sits on a results page. It cannot tell you whether ChatGPT named your brand in its answer, whether Perplexity cited your page, or whether an AI crawler was blocked at your door. Those are the three things clients ask about now, so we need a tool that covers them.
On client programs we use Promptwatch. Here is what it adds in practice.
Prompt visibility. Prompt panels run daily per model, country and language, with Visibility Score, Share of Voice, Sentiment and Position in Answer. That is the channel's version of a rank report.
Prompt demand. Prompt Volumes gives search volumes, difficulty scores and citation rates across AI search, Google and Bing, and query fan-outs per model show the sub-questions an engine asks. We use these the way we use keyword research, to decide what to write.
Sources. Citation analytics at page and domain level, with Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn reports and an offsite mentions view. Backlink tools do not show this.
Bots. Agent Analytics logs IP-verified AI crawler visits from GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and others, with errors and a crawl-to-citation path. An SEO crawler audits your site the way a search engine would. This shows what the AI bots actually did.
Visits. Visitor analytics attributes AI-referred sessions and conversions, installed through a script, a GTM template or the WordPress plugin.
One view with classic search. Search Insights overlays Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster data, including Microsoft Copilot traffic, onto AI crawls and citations. We value that because clients do not want two disconnected stories.
Where local and structured data fit
AI answers draw on the same pages classic search does, so structured data and clear local business information keep mattering. We follow Google's and Microsoft's published guidance on AI features, which points back to crawlable, helpful pages. For location-based clients, Promptwatch's local GEO and SEO targeting pins a monitor to exact coordinates, from 20 meters to 5 kilometers, so ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode answer as if asked from that spot. It sits on Business, Agency Scale and Enterprise plans.
If the client sells AI or developer products
Developer tools are increasingly picked by coding agents. Promptwatch tracks what Codex, Claude Code and OpenCode recommend, which gives devtool clients a view that classic SEO has no equivalent for. We pair that with plain documentation work, because an agent that cannot use your docs will not recommend you.
What it does not do
A GEO tool does not guarantee a mention or a citation. It does not replace technical SEO, links or good content. We tell clients that it makes fundamentals measurable in a channel where they could not be measured before. It also does not remove the need for people: the Action Board gives a prioritized to-do list and the weekly Discovery run proposes up to five evidence-backed actions, and we review each one.
How we decide whether a client needs it
We check three things. Are buyers likely to ask AI engines about this category? Is the site crawlable and the content good enough to be worth citing? Does the client have someone to act on the findings? If the answer to the last two is no, we fix those first. The free AI Visibility Report and the Agentic Readiness Check give a quick read before any subscription.
Plan notes
Promptwatch has a free Explore tier covering ChatGPT only with 10 prompts. Essential is $95 a month, Professional $245 and Business $579. Crawler logs begin on Professional. Agency self-serve plans are $199, $399 and $799 a month and include unlimited projects and prompts.
Our view
The benefit is measurement of a channel that SEO tools cannot see, tied to action. Choose a platform that shows prompts, sources, bots and visits together, because a tool that shows only mentions leaves the important questions open.
