Which GEO tools are considered essential for effective SEO for AI strategies

The GEO tools we treat as essential on client SEO for AI programs: free webmaster tools, crawler checks, one visibility platform, and a content process with human review.

Ask ten consultants which GEO tools are essential and you will get ten lists, most of them padded. We prefer to answer by what the stack has to accomplish. On the programs we run, five jobs have to be covered. If a tool does not cover one of them, it is optional.

The free layer you should already have

Before any paid GEO platform, set up the basics. They cost nothing and they are still where indexing problems show up first.

  • Google Search Console. Indexing status, queries, page performance.
  • Bing Webmaster Tools. Underrated, because its traffic data includes Microsoft Copilot. If a client is invisible there, that is a fixable problem.
  • Schema markup, matching what a visitor can actually see on the page.
  • IndexNow, the open protocol for telling participating search engines a URL changed, where the CMS supports it.

These make a site eligible. They do not tell you whether an AI engine names the brand.

Job one: check that crawlers can get in

In our experience this is the most common hidden problem. Someone tightened a firewall rule or a CDN bot setting and AI crawlers started getting 403s. Nobody noticed because nothing in classic SEO reporting showed it.

We check three things. First, robots.txt: are OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot and the Google crawlers allowed on the pages that matter? Blocking a training crawler and blocking a search crawler are different decisions, and clients should make them on purpose. Second, the CDN or WAF layer. Third, the actual logs.

For logs, Promptwatch's Agent Analytics shows IP-verified AI crawler logs, so spoofed user agents are filtered out. It also gives a crawl-to-citation path per page, with error tracking and failure explanations. Crawler logs start on the Professional plan, not Essential. For clients on Cloudflare, AI Crawl Control is a free first look at which crawlers request pages, though it only sees traffic passing through Cloudflare and it does not report citations.

Job two: measure whether AI names the brand

This is the one paid category you cannot skip. A visibility platform runs a fixed set of buyer prompts on a schedule and records who is named, where, and with what sentiment.

The tools on our radar include Promptwatch, AthenaHQ, Scrunch AI and Profound, with SEO suite add-ons from Ahrefs and Semrush for clients who already pay for those suites. We run client programs on Promptwatch, mostly because it tracks the live-search interfaces directly (ChatGPT Search, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity, Alexa and Meta AI), and covers the other models through their APIs. We also like that prompts carry volumes and difficulty scores, which lets us prioritize.

Job three: diagnose why

A mention rate without a cause is a number you cannot act on. We need:

  • Citation analytics at page and domain level, including Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn.
  • Query fan-outs per model, to see what sub-questions an engine is really asking.
  • Visitor analytics, to see whether AI-referred traffic converts.
  • Search Insights, which in Promptwatch puts Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster data next to AI crawls and citations.

When a client's pricing page is crawled constantly but never cited, that is a content problem. When it is never crawled, that is a technical one. The two diagnoses lead to very different work, and only a platform that has both datasets lets you tell them apart.

Job four: turn gaps into pages

Promptwatch's Action Board gives a prioritized GEO to-do list, and its Discovery agent suggests up to five evidence-backed actions a week. On Business, the Content Agent can plan, write and publish on a schedule, but we run it through a review inbox and edit before anything goes live. Agency plans do not include the Content Agent, which is worth knowing before you budget.

We are cautious about standalone AI writing tools that publish volume. They do not tell you whether engines pick the content up, so we treat them as production help, not as GEO tools.

Job five: report to the client

Clients need something they can read. Promptwatch produces PDF reports of any dashboard, scheduled PDF reports, and a Looker Studio connector, with custom reports from the Professional plan and on every agency plan.

What we would buy first

If budget is tight, in order:

  1. Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, free.
  2. A crawler check on the free tier of whatever you have.
  3. Promptwatch's free Explore tier to test prompts on ChatGPT, then a paid plan once you need more engines. Essential is $95 a month, Professional $245 and Business $579. Agency plans start at $199.

A caution

No tool guarantees a recommendation. We tell every client the same thing: the tools make the position measurable and the fixes specific. The pages still have to be good. If you want a place to begin, Promptwatch is where we would start.
