I'm using traditional SEO methods, but they don't seem effective for AI platforms: what we change
What we change when a client's traditional SEO methods stop working on AI platforms: prompt sets, citation sources, crawler access and measurement that fits.
This is one of the most common conversations we have. A client has solid rankings, a decent backlink profile and a content calendar, and still cannot get named by ChatGPT or Perplexity. They assume the SEO is failing. Usually it is not. It is aimed at a different system.
Here is what we change, in the order we change it.
First, stop expecting rank to translate
Rank is a position on a page of results. AI answers are a handful of names inside a paragraph. A client can rank first for a keyword and not appear in the answer to the matching question. We say this early because otherwise people keep checking rankings to diagnose a citation problem.
The replacement metrics are Share of Voice, Position in Answer and Sentiment, measured across a fixed set of prompts. Promptwatch reports all three, and runs prompt panels daily per model, country and language.
Second, rebuild the keyword list as prompts
Keywords are short. Prompts are long, contextual and often include constraints: team size, budget, location, a tool the buyer already uses. We build the prompt set with the sales team, since call recordings are better source material than any keyword tool, then fill gaps with Promptwatch's Prompt Explorer, which suggests prompts from Search Console, ranking keywords, People Also Ask or any page.
We also look at query fan-outs. Engines split a prompt into several searches before answering, so a page needs to address a cluster of sub-questions. Promptwatch shows fan-outs per model, and the free GEO Inspector Chrome extension shows ChatGPT fan-outs and fetched versus cited sources, running locally. That is often the moment a client sees why their one big pillar page is not enough.
Third, check access before content
Bots like GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot are not Googlebot, and a firewall rule that blocks them will not show in classic SEO reporting. We check robots.txt, WAF and CDN rules, and view page source to confirm the content is not hidden behind client-side JavaScript. Then we read the logs.
Promptwatch's Agent Analytics provides IP-verified crawler logs, so spoofed user agents are filtered out, with error tracking and a crawl-to-citation path per page. Crawler logs start on the Professional plan at $245 a month, not Essential. For a client who says "SEO does not work for AI," this step alone has resolved the question more than once.
Fourth, widen the lens beyond your own site
Traditional SEO focuses on your pages and links to them. AI engines draw on Reddit, YouTube, review sites and third-party lists as well. Promptwatch's citation analytics break sources down by page, domain, Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn, and show offsite mentions, where a brand is named in a third-party page without a link. When a client is absent, we open the citations and decide whether the fix is a better page, an inclusion on someone else's list, or a presence in a forum.
Fifth, make the content easier to quote
We rewrite the key pages so the answer is near the top, in plain sentences, with specifics rather than slogans. We avoid fabricating statistics or quotes to look authoritative, because an engine can cite you for a claim you cannot support. Promptwatch's Content Refresh gives diff-style suggestions for existing pages, and the Answer Gap report points to the prompts where competitors win.
For clients on Business, the Content Agent can plan, write and publish on a schedule. We run it through a review inbox and edit before anything goes live. Agency plans do not include it.
Sixth, measure the outcome that matters
Clients need to know whether this is worth the effort. Visitor analytics in Promptwatch attribute AI-referred visits and conversions, so we can report something better than a visibility score. TreeHouse, which runs Pararius and Huurwoningen.nl, reported AI search reaching about 25% of its organic conversions after fixing crawler access and automating weekly reporting. That is their result, and we do not quote it as a promise.
What does not change
Fundamentals still count. Crawlable pages, clean structure, accurate schema and genuine expertise all help. We are not asking anyone to throw away their SEO program, only to add a layer that measures and acts on citations.
What it costs to try
Promptwatch's Explore tier is free for 10 prompts on ChatGPT only. Paid brand plans are Essential $95 a month, Professional $245 and Business $579. Agency plans start at Kick-off, $199 a month.
The honest limit
No method can guarantee an engine will name your brand. Answers shift with model, country and phrasing. What we can promise a client is a measurement they can repeat and a list of fixes backed by evidence. If you want to see that on your own site, start with Promptwatch.
