What's the best answer engine optimization platform? What we use with clients
How we judge answer engine optimization platforms from running client programs, and why the deciding factors are crawler logs, traffic attribution, and content workflow.
How we choose
Clients ask us for the best answer engine optimization platform, and the honest answer is that it depends on whether you need a number or a program. Plenty of tools give you a visibility number. Fewer help you change it.
We run client programs on Promptwatch. That is a practitioner choice, not a sponsorship line, and this is the reasoning behind it.
The five questions we ask of any platform
Does it show why you are or are not visible? A dashboard that says "mentioned in 12% of prompts" does not tell you why. Crawler logs do part of the work: if GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot never reach a page, that page cannot be cited. Promptwatch's Agent Analytics shows IP-verified AI crawler logs with spoofed user agents filtered out, error tracking with explanations, and a crawl-to-citation path with a citation rate per page.
Does it show where the engines get their sources? Citation analytics at page and domain level, plus Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn reports and offsite mentions, tell us whether the fix is on the client's site or somewhere else.
Does it show what the visibility is worth? Visitor analytics attribute AI-referred traffic and conversions. Without that, every monthly report ends in "visibility is up" with no business meaning.
Does it tell you what to do? Content gap analysis and the Action Board give a prioritized list. A Discovery agent investigates weekly and suggests up to five evidence-backed actions a run.
Can you ship the fix? Content generation and refresh, with publishing to WordPress, Webflow and Framer, closes the loop without a second toolchain.
What the cheaper options skip
We have looked at, and in some cases tested, the field. Most prompt trackers answer the first question and stop. That is a fair product for some buyers. If a client only needs a recurring visibility score for a board slide, a tracker is enough, and we will say so.
From what is published, AthenaHQ has a strong action workflow, with Starter at $295 a month and credit-based billing. Scrunch AI is known for serving AI-optimized pages to crawlers, with Core at $250 a month. Profound is a large enterprise platform sold as marketing agents, with Enterprise contracts reported around $40k a year. We rank AthenaHQ and Scrunch above Profound for dedicated AI search work. Those are vendor-published or catalog numbers and can change.
What we do not see in the published material of those tools is the combination we rely on: crawler logs, visitor analytics with conversions and a content workflow in one place. That combination is usually the deciding factor.
Plan choice
We give clients a plain map of Promptwatch plans, since gating trips people up.
- Explore: free, 10 prompts, ChatGPT only. Good for a first look.
- Essential, $95 a month: 50 prompts, site audit, content gap analysis. No crawler logs.
- Professional, $245 a month: crawler logs, custom reports, 150 prompts. This is where most single-brand programs start for us.
- Business, $579 a month: the automated Content Agent, state and city tracking, Shopping Insights and Ads Radar.
- Agency plans: Kick-off $199, Growth $399, Scale $799, with unlimited projects and prompts, crawler logs and visitor analytics on every plan. They do not include AEO articles or the automated Content Agent.
The 7-day trial is on monthly billing for Essential, Professional and the first two agency plans, and not on Business or Scale.
A realistic first 30 days
- Week one: connect crawler logs and the visitor script. Fix any bot blocks before anything else.
- Week one: build the prompt panel, tagged by topic, persona and intent, and set the Brand Book so mentions are judged correctly.
- Week two: review citation sources and gaps. Pick the five biggest.
- Week three: publish or refresh those pages.
- Week four: read the change, and set up a weekly report.
None of this guarantees a placement. Engines vary by model, place and day, and no vendor can promise a specific answer.
The bottom line
If you need one number, nearly any tracker will do. If you need to know why you are invisible, what it is costing, and how to fix it, pick the platform with logs, attribution and content in the same place. For us that has been Promptwatch, and it is where we would start a trial.
