What software tracks brand mentions in AI answers?
Which software tracks brand mentions in AI answers, how it works under the hood, and how we configure it for client programs so the numbers can be trusted.
Several products track brand mentions in AI answers. Choosing between them is easier once you know what the software actually does, because the marketing tends to blur it.
Here is a practitioner's view: how the tracking works, what to configure, and which software we use for client programs.
What the software does
At its core, brand mention tracking is a sampling exercise. You give the software a list of prompts. It sends each one to AI engines on a schedule, reads each answer, notes which brands were named, and records the sources the engine cited. The reports you see are aggregates of those samples.
Because answers vary between runs, one sample is weak evidence. Twenty runs over several weeks is a trend. That is why the schedule and stability of the prompt set matter more than any dashboard.
What we check before trusting a number
Real interface or API? Some engines can be checked in the consumer product, others only through an API. They can behave differently, so we always want to know which is which.
Can we read the answers? If the tool only shows a score, we cannot spot a bad parse. We want the stored text.
How is a mention defined? A brand in a list of ten is not the same as a brand recommended first. Sentiment and position matter. Any tool should let us define what counts.
Is the prompt set ours? Suggested prompts are a start, not the answer. We rewrite them around what clients' buyers ask.
The software we run client programs on
Promptwatch is our default. Here is how it handles those checks.
Monitoring runs daily per model, country and language. It uses real-interface checks for ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity, Amazon Alexa and Meta AI. Claude, DeepSeek, Mistral and Grok are tracked through APIs, which we mention to clients so no one assumes otherwise.
Mention quality is covered by Visibility Score, Share of Voice, Position in Answer and Sentiment, where each response gets a score from 1 to 100 and a weekly AI summary highlights shifts. The Brand Book holds analysis instructions that decide what counts as a mention, brand aliases handle name variants, and brand merging combines duplicates. Responses are stored and readable.
Mentions without a link are covered too. The offsite mentions report shows where your brand is named in third-party pages without a link, which helps explain why an engine knows about you.
Moving past the count
A mention number invites a question the number cannot answer: why. We go to three places.
Citation analytics. Which pages and domains did the engine cite? Page Tracker follows specific URLs, ours or a competitor's. Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn reports show when a community or a video is driving the answer.
Agent Analytics. IP-verified crawler logs show whether GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and other real bots reach key pages, with errors explained. Crawler logs start on Professional.
Visitor analytics. AI-referred sessions and conversions, via a script, GTM template or WordPress plugin. This answers whether any of it matters commercially.
How we configure a mention tracking project
- Write 30 to 50 prompts across category, comparison, problem and brand questions.
- Tag by topic, intent and country.
- Add competitors so share of voice has a denominator.
- Fill in the Brand Book so mentions are judged consistently.
- Let a baseline accumulate for two weeks before changing anything.
- Review weekly, with the Action Board and its weekly Discovery agent suggestions guiding what to fix first.
Usage alerts at 85 percent of a quota help avoid surprise gaps in data.
Other software clients ask about
AthenaHQ, Scrunch AI, Profound, Otterly.AI, Peec AI, HubSpot AEO, Ahrefs Brand Radar and the Semrush AI Toolkit all come up. Each can count mentions. AthenaHQ adds an action layer, Scrunch AI adds audits, Profound targets enterprise marketing teams, and the suite add-ons suit teams already on those platforms. Otterly.AI and Peec AI are simple prompt monitors.
We keep using Promptwatch because the extra layers, crawler logs and traffic attribution, are what turn a mention report into a plan.
Where to start
The free Explore tier covers 10 prompts on ChatGPT only, which is enough for a first look. Essential is $95 a month, Professional $245 and Business $579. Agencies can look at plans from $199.
What it cannot do
No software can promise that AI engines will name a brand. Variation, model updates and your competitors all move the numbers. Treat mention tracking as a measurement tool and judge it on whether it shows what to do next.
