Which tools are best for monitoring AI-generated summaries of my brand? What we use for clients
How we monitor AI-generated summaries of a client's brand across ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews, which tools we use, and how we turn wrong summaries into fixes.
Clients usually discover AI-generated summaries by accident. Someone on the team asks ChatGPT about the company, or sees an AI Overview at the top of a search, and finds a short paragraph that is half right. The reaction is a mix of curiosity and alarm. Our job is to turn that into something measurable.
What we mean by monitoring
A summary is a moving target. It changes with the model, the country, the phrasing and the day. So a screenshot is not monitoring. Monitoring is a fixed prompt set, run on a schedule, with the answers stored and compared.
For each prompt we want the text of the summary, whether the brand is in it, where, what the tone is, which competitors appear beside it, and which sources it drew on. We also want to know whether the bots behind the summary could read the client's site.
The prompt set
We build it from sales calls and search data. Category questions ("best X for Y"), comparison questions and direct brand questions ("what is [brand]?"). The brand questions are where summaries tend to go wrong, since they produce the closest thing to an AI-written company profile. We also include prompts that trigger Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, because those appear on ordinary search results.
Coverage matters
Promptwatch monitors ChatGPT Search, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity, Amazon Alexa and Meta AI through the real interfaces, and tracks Claude, DeepSeek, Mistral and Grok through APIs. We tell clients the difference. What a person sees in the product is the thing that shapes perception, and API output can differ from it.
What we read in the output
Visibility Score, Share of Voice and Position in Answer give us the quantitative picture. Sentiment is scored per response from 1 to 100, with a weekly AI summary of how engines describe the brand. A Brand Book holds the analysis instructions that decide what counts as a mention, which matters for clients with similar names or old product names. A/B period comparison shows drift.
We always read a sample of raw responses as well. A score can hide the one sentence that matters, such as an outdated claim about pricing or a feature the client dropped two years ago.
Fixing a wrong summary
You cannot edit an AI summary, but you can change what it is built from. When a response is wrong, we open the citations. Promptwatch breaks sources into page, domain, Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn, with offsite mentions for third-party pages naming the brand without a link. The fix then falls into one of three buckets:
- The source is wrong. Ask the third party to correct it, or publish a clearer page that outranks it in citations.
- The source is the client's own outdated page. Update it. Content Refresh gives diff-style suggestions.
- The model cannot find a good source. Create the page that should exist.
We also check access. Agent Analytics shows IP-verified crawler logs, so we can see whether GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot or PerplexityBot fetched the pages we want used, and what status they got. Crawler logs start on the Professional plan at $245 a month.
Reporting back
Clients want a short answer: what do AI engines say about us, has it changed, what are we doing. We use PDF reports of any dashboard, and scheduled PDF reports for ongoing programs. The Action Board holds the fix list with assignees.
What other tools offer
Clients sometimes arrive with another tool. AthenaHQ rolls results into a GEO score, with Starter at $295 a month. Scrunch AI includes sentiment analysis and AI bot traffic reporting, with Core at $250 a month for four LLMs including Google AI Overviews. Profound is enterprise, with an earlier estimate of about $40k a year. HubSpot AEO tracks three engines, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini, for $50 a month, which means it does not cover Google's AI Overviews. We check coverage against the surfaces the client's buyers use.
Cost
Explore is free (10 prompts, ChatGPT only). Essential is $95 a month, Professional $245 and Business $579. Agency plans start at Kick-off, $199 a month.
What we tell clients
No tool controls what an engine writes, and none can guarantee a particular summary. What monitoring gives you is the text, the trend and the source. To start your own monitoring, Promptwatch has a free tier for a first look.
