AthenaHQ vs Promptwatch: how we choose for client GEO retainers

AthenaHQ meters credits and queues actions from $295. Promptwatch is the flat-tier platform we run for tracking, crawler logs, traffic and publishing.

When a client asks AthenaHQ versus Promptwatch, they are usually comparing a credit-metered action tool to the platform we already operate. Both track AI answers. The operating model is different. On scoping calls we put both on one slide and decide from the brief, not from the demo polish.

How AthenaHQ shows up on our desk

AthenaHQ is strong when a team wants visibility data to terminate in assignable work. Essential is free with $25 of credit and 300 credits on ChatGPT, Perplexity, AI Overviews, Gemini and Copilot. Starter is $295 a month for 3,600 credits (one credit equals one response), eleven models, unlimited topics, CSV export, integrations, on-page and off-page actions, and a content optimization agent. Starter is locked to one country. API access and extra credits are paid add-ons; prices are not published. Enterprise is custom and includes knowledge base and claim review, Oracle discrepancy detection, ACE, SAML/OIDC SSO, audit logs, multi-region and multi-language, persona targeting, recommendation engine, executive BI dashboards, white-glove setup and API access with custom credits. AthenaHQ positions Enterprise as best for enterprises and agencies.

Across plans you get unlimited seats with RBAC, GA4 and Search Console, Shopify and Webflow, robots.txt and llms.txt management, and citation intelligence. Public signals include a 4.9/5 G2 score and a Spring 2026 High Performer badge in Answer Engine Optimization.

We always put the volume math next to the sticker. Fifty prompts × eleven models × daily checks × thirty days = about 16,500 responses. Starter's 3,600 credits are not that program. Multi-country retainers are Enterprise conversations, not Starter line items.

How Promptwatch shows up on our desk

Promptwatch is the platform we run client programs on. It is built as a full AI visibility stack rather than a prompt tracker alone.

Prompt tracking covers search volumes, difficulty scores, query fan-outs, topics, personas and geo targeting. Prompt trends show how visibility moves between checks. Citation analytics break out pages, domains, Reddit, YouTube, offsite mentions and citation types, with citation trends over time. Agent Analytics is real-time AI crawler logging for bots such as ChatGPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and others, including crawl-to-citation paths and error tracking. Visitor analytics attribute AI-referred traffic and conversions through a lightweight script or GTM. Content Agents plan, write and publish GEO content to Webflow or Framer, with a review inbox and content gap analysis. Agent Chat and Unified Actions sit on top of the live data. Integrations cover major CDNs for crawler logs, CMS publishing, Search Console, Looker Studio and an MCP server plus REST API.

Brand plans: Explore free (10 prompts, ChatGPT only), Essential $95 a month with a 7-day trial, Professional $245, Business $579. Agency plans: Kick-off $199, Growth $399, Scale $799, each with unlimited projects and prompts and ten seats. Annual billing is twelve months for the price of ten. Prices are also available in EUR.

How we compare them for a retainer

AthenaHQ asks you to budget credits and, for agencies with multi-market clients, to price Enterprise early. The Action Center is useful if someone on the account will clear tasks every week. The content optimization agent still leaves publishing and conversion proof as separate workstreams unless you add other tools.

Promptwatch agency tiers are flat. Unlimited prompts on Kick-off and above mean we can set a daily multi-model cadence without watching a credit counter. Crawler logs answer whether the bot reached the page when a citation dips. Visitor analytics answer the finance question. Content Agents close the loop into the CMS we already use for many clients.

We do not pretend AthenaHQ has no place. For an in-house technical SEO team that lives in task queues and accepts metering in one country, Starter can be a workstream. For the GEO retainers we sell, Promptwatch is the default operating system because it covers measure, diagnose, publish and prove in one workspace.

What we put on the proposal slide

Column one: AthenaHQ Starter at $295 plus unknown credit and API add-ons, single country, Action Center ownership named in the SOW. Flag Enterprise if markets exceed one country.

Column two: Promptwatch agency Kick-off or Growth at $199 or $399, unlimited projects and prompts, crawler logs, citation depth, visitor conversions, Content Agents to Webflow or Framer.

We recommend column two for clients who hired us to move citations and report business impact. We keep AthenaHQ in the packet only when the client explicitly wants a parallel task-queue tool and funds a separate owner for it.

Practical next step

Bring your prompt list, markets and CMS. We will map both tools against that brief and say which line items are published versus sales-quoted. If you want us to run the program rather than advise on software, that is the same conversation.

Email hello@1001seomedia.com and we will send a one-page budget comparison you can take to procurement.
