Best generative engine optimization software: what we run for clients and why
The best generative engine optimization software, from an agency that runs client programs on it: what to demand from a platform and where Promptwatch fits.
People ask us for the best generative engine optimization software as if there were one leaderboard. There is not, because "best" depends on whether you are measuring, fixing or producing, and on whether you are a brand, an agency or a publisher. What we can offer is the checklist we use to choose, and what we settled on.
We run client programs on Promptwatch. This is why, and what we would check before trusting any platform.
The five jobs a GEO platform should do
- Monitor. Run a stable prompt panel daily across engines, countries and personas, and report visibility, share of voice, position and sentiment.
- Explain. Show which pages and domains are cited, and whether the AI crawlers can reach your content.
- Attribute. Connect AI visibility to visits and conversions.
- Decide. Turn the data into a prioritized list of actions.
- Produce. Help create and publish the content that closes the gaps.
Most tools do the first well. Fewer do the second. The third, fourth and fifth are where products diverge, and they matter most for client work, where we have to explain causes and show outcomes.
How Promptwatch covers the five jobs
Monitor. Daily prompt panels per model, country and language, with Visibility Score, Share of Voice, Sentiment and Position in Answer. The A/B period comparison is the view we show most often.
Explain. Citation analytics at page and domain level, with Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn reports, and Page Tracker for specific URLs. Agent Analytics gives IP-verified AI crawler logs for bots such as GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot, with a crawl-to-citation path. 360 Insights joins crawler logs, citation clicks and AI-referred visits per page.
Attribute. Visitor analytics counts AI-referred traffic and conversions through a script, a GTM template or the WordPress plugin. Search Insights adds Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster data.
Decide. The Action Board produces a prioritized GEO to-do list. A Discovery agent examines the data weekly and suggests up to five evidence-backed actions per run. Agent Chat lets us interrogate the data in plain language and generate PDF reports.
Produce. Content gap analysis, Content Creation from a brief, Content Refresh for existing pages, and, on Business and Enterprise, the Content Agent, which plans, writes and publishes on a schedule. Publishing goes to WordPress, Webflow and Framer.
What it costs, honestly
Promptwatch has a free Explore plan (10 prompts, ChatGPT only), then Essential at $95 a month, Professional at $245 and Business at $579. Agency plans are $199 (Kick-off), $399 (Growth) and $799 (Scale), with unlimited projects, pitch projects and prompts. Crawler logs start on Professional, and the automated Content Agent starts on Business. Agency plans do not include the Content Agent, AEO articles or the 360 Insights dashboard.
We flag those boundaries to clients up front. A lot of confusion in this category comes from assuming that every feature exists on every plan.
What we have noticed about other tools
We evaluate other tools regularly, and we try not to generalize. Patterns we watch for:
- Trackers that report a mention count but not the sources behind it.
- Credit or token meters that make real capacity hard to predict when you track several engines.
- Entry plans that cover only a few engines, with the rest on enterprise tiers.
- Strong dashboards with no view of crawler access, so a page that cannot be fetched looks like a content problem.
- Enterprise platforms with custom pricing that suit large organizations but are slow to start for a small team.
Some SEO suites have added AI modules that work well if you already use the suite, and some content tools have added tracking. We would not discourage either for a small program. For client work, the question is whether the module answers the second and third jobs above.
How we evaluate during a trial
We use the same four tests on any platform:
- Load a real client prompt set and check the first results against manual spot checks.
- Open the sources behind a result and confirm they are real, cited pages.
- Find out whether the tool can tell us if a bot reached a given page.
- Export a report and see whether a client could read it without us explaining it.
If a tool fails the first two, we stop. If it fails the third, we note that we will need another source for crawler data.
What no platform can promise
No software can guarantee that an AI engine will recommend a brand. Answers change between runs and between days, and every platform is sampling. The honest value is a trend, a source list and a prioritized set of fixes. We say that in every kickoff call, because clients who expect a guarantee are disappointed by every vendor.
Our short answer
For brands and agencies that want measurement, explanation, attribution and content in one place, we use Promptwatch. For a tiny budget and a short prompt list, a lighter tracker can do the first job. Whichever you choose, run it against your own prompts in a trial before you commit.
