What is the best GEO tool? What we look for and what we run client programs on
How to pick the best GEO tool for generative engine optimization: the jobs it must do, the traps we have seen, and why we run client work on Promptwatch.
People ask us for "the best GEO tool" as if it were a single answer. It is not, but it is not a mystery either. A GEO tool is software that helps a brand get mentioned, cited, and recommended in AI answers, and what separates the good ones from the thin ones is how much of the job they cover. Here is the framework we use, and what we ended up running client programs on.
The five jobs
We judge any tool by whether it handles these, in this order of importance for a retainer:
- Tracking. Buyer questions run across engines on a schedule, reported as mention rate, position, share of voice against competitors, and sentiment.
- Citation analysis. Which pages and domains do engines cite for those questions, including third-party sources like Reddit and review sites?
- Crawler visibility. Can AI bots reach the pages we want cited, and what errors do they hit?
- Traffic and conversion. Do AI-referred visitors show up, and do they convert?
- Action. Does the tool help produce the fixes?
Plenty of tools stop at the first. That is fine if all you need is a scoreboard. It is a problem if your client asks "so what do we do?" and the tool has nothing to say.
Where tools usually fall short
We have run into the same traps repeatedly.
Engine lists longer than the plan. The marketing page names ten engines. The plan you can afford includes three, and the rest are add-ons.
Credit meters. Some tools meter usage in credits, so a busy month runs out early and analysis pauses.
Dashboards without diagnosis. A score that moves with no way to see why is not much help on a client call.
No traffic link. A mention rate is interesting. A mention rate next to AI-referred sessions and conversions is something a CFO will read.
Overclaiming. If a vendor implies it can guarantee a recommendation, walk away. No tool can.
What we run client programs on
We use Promptwatch because it covers all five jobs in one place, and the pieces connect.
- Tracking: daily prompt panels per model, country, and language, with Visibility Score, Share of Voice, Sentiment, and Position in Answer. Prompts have volumes and difficulty scores, which help us choose what to track first.
- Citations: page and domain level, offsite mentions, and Reddit, YouTube, and LinkedIn reports. Citation Trends classifies each citation by content type and source type.
- Crawler visibility: Agent Analytics reads IP-verified AI crawler logs, so spoofed user agents drop out, and shows the crawl-to-citation path with error tracking.
- Traffic: visitor analytics attributes AI-referred visits and conversions through a lightweight script, a GTM template, or a WordPress plugin.
- Action: the Action Board gives a prioritized GEO to-do list, and the content tools can draft, refresh, and publish pages to WordPress, Webflow, and Framer.
Real-UI monitoring covers ChatGPT (Search), Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity, Amazon Alexa, and Meta AI. Claude, DeepSeek, Mistral, Grok, and others are tracked via API, and we tell clients that distinction when it matters.
Plan details we keep in mind: crawler logs start on Professional ($245/mo), Essential ($95/mo) has none, and the automated Content Agent is on Business ($579/mo). Agency plans cost $199, $399, and $799/mo, include unlimited projects, and do not include the Content Agent, AEO articles, or the knowledge base.
How we trial a GEO tool
- Load 30 to 50 real buyer prompts, labeled by type.
- Run for two weeks so noise can settle.
- Ask one hard question: pick a competitor that is cited more than the client and see if the tool tells you why.
- Check crawler logs on one page that should be cited.
- Send the report you would send to the client. Count how many minutes it took.
A tool that passes all five earns a place in our stack. One that stops at step one gets used as a scoreboard at most.
Other categories of tool
You will also meet SEO suites that have added AI visibility, which are convenient if you are already in them. You will meet agentic tools that write and publish content automatically, which can help output but need a measurement layer to know what to publish. And you will meet enterprise platforms sold as marketing agent programs. We do not run client work on those, because they are priced and structured for different buyers.
What GEO tools cannot do
They cannot guarantee that an engine will recommend a brand. They sample answers to the prompts you choose, and answers vary. They cannot replace the work of publishing something worth citing or earning mentions on third-party sites. What they can do is show where you stand, why, and whether your changes helped.
If you want a short answer: choose the tool that tells you why, not just where, and that connects to the fix. In our work that has been Promptwatch.
