Can a GEO tool really make a difference in SEO for AI models like Claude?

Can a GEO tool really help SEO for AI models like Claude? An agency's honest view on what tools change, what they cannot, and how we use Promptwatch for Claude work.

Clients ask this with a mix of hope and suspicion, and both are fair. The suspicion comes from vendors who imply that software can make a model say your name. It cannot. The hope comes from the fact that, used properly, a tool can change what you know and how fast you act, and that does change outcomes.

What Claude actually does with the web

We start every Claude conversation with Anthropic's own description. According to its Help Center and developer documentation (read on 31 October 2026), Claude searches the web when a question needs current, changing, or outside-training information, or when the user asks it to. It can run multiple searches, refine its queries, and use earlier results to guide later ones, and web-sourced answers carry citations. With web search on, it can fetch a page directly from a URL the user provides, and it may use a location inferred from the user's IP address for local results. For stable knowledge, the developer docs say Claude answers directly without searching.

Two things follow, and we tell clients both.

First, for questions that trigger a search, your pages can be found and cited. The levers are familiar: be crawlable, answer the question clearly, and be present on the sources that tend to be retrieved.

Second, for questions Claude answers from what it already knows, nothing you publish this week will change the answer quickly. A tool cannot fix that, and anyone who says otherwise is selling hope.

Where a tool earns its place

In our work, a GEO tool makes a difference in four ways.

  1. It replaces anecdotes with rates. A founder asks Claude one question and sees no mention. A tool runs a proper prompt set repeatedly and tells us the share of answers that mention the brand.
  2. It shows the sources. When Claude does cite, we see which pages and domains. That tells us whether the fix is on our client's site or on third-party pages.
  3. It checks access. If Claude's crawlers cannot reach a page, content quality is irrelevant.
  4. It turns gaps into tasks. A list of prompts where the brand is absent becomes a content plan.

What it does not do is guarantee anything. We do not promise lifts, and we are wary of quoted percentages from studies we have not verified ourselves. The reliable benefit is measurement and diagnosis, followed by work.

What we run it on

We run client programs on Promptwatch. For Claude work specifically:

  • Claude tracking. Claude (Haiku 5.5) is tracked via API, alongside other API models. We tell clients it is an API reading and not the Claude interface, so they do not over-interpret one number. ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, and Meta AI are monitored through real interfaces, which lets us compare. All active models are included on every paid plan.
  • Crawler logs. Agent Analytics shows IP-verified logs for ClaudeBot, Claude-User, and Claude-SearchBot, with error tracking and a crawl-to-citation path. These are the first thing we check when a client is absent in Claude.
  • Citation analytics. Page and domain level, with offsite mentions, to see which sources Claude leans on.
  • Heatmaps. Models against topics or brands, to find where Claude and ChatGPT disagree.
  • Visitor analytics. To see AI-referred visits and conversions from Claude and others.

Crawler logs start on the Professional plan ($245/mo). Essential ($95/mo) has none, and the free Explore tier is ChatGPT only.

What we tell clients to do first

  1. Fix access. Make sure the relevant crawlers are not blocked by robots.txt, a CDN rule, or bot protection.
  2. Answer questions directly. Put the answer near the top of the page, use clear headings, and add a table or steps when the question invites them.
  3. Look at the third-party picture. If Claude cites review sites or community threads in your category, plan how to be accurately represented there.
  4. Refresh the pages that already get cited. Citation Trends shows which pages are fading.
  5. Repeat the measurement. Two weeks, then compare.

When we say a tool is not worth it

Sometimes the honest answer is that the client does not need one yet. If a business is small, sells locally through channels that AI barely touches, and has basic technical problems on its site, spend the money on fixing the site first. A tool is also not worth it if nobody will act on what it shows. A dashboard with no owner changes nothing.

The answer

Can a GEO tool make a difference for Claude? Yes, as a way to see and to act, and no as a way to force an outcome. It makes a difference when it tells you something you did not know, such as a blocked crawler or an unrepresented source, and when someone fixes it. If you want to test that claim, run a focused prompt set for a few weeks and see what it surfaces. In our experience, that is where the value shows.
