The best platform to track AI visibility by location: what we use for clients
How we track AI visibility by location for clients, from country to city to exact coordinates, and the Promptwatch features and plans we use to do it.
Location is the first thing clients forget to mention and the first thing that breaks a visibility report. A brand can look healthy overall while being invisible in the three cities that produce most of its revenue. When we scope an AI visibility program, we decide early which level of location the client actually needs.
Three levels, three different problems
Country and language. For most software and ecommerce clients, this is enough. The same question in another market can produce different brands, so we track each market separately instead of reporting an average.
State and city. For regional service businesses, franchises and multi-outlet retailers, we need results that reflect each area. A national number hides the weak spots.
Exact coordinates. For businesses where proximity drives the answer, such as clinics, restaurants and trades, the result changes with the point on the map. This is the level that needs the most careful setup.
We ask clients where their customers physically are, and which locations make money. That tells us which level to buy.
What we look for in a platform
Prompts that mirror local intent, written the way people ask: "emergency plumber in [city]", "best family dentist near me", "which store near me stocks X". Daily runs, since answers move. A way to compare locations side by side. Citation analytics per location, because the cited sources are often local directories and review sites. And evidence of whether AI crawlers reach the location pages, since thin or blocked location pages are a common failure.
Why we run location work on Promptwatch
We run client programs on Promptwatch, and its location handling covers the three levels without switching tools.
Country-level tracking is on every paid plan. State and city tracking starts on the Business plan and is included on every agency plan. In October 2026 Promptwatch added Local GEO/SEO targeting: a monitor pinned to exact coordinates, with a radius from 20 meters to 5 kilometers, so ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode answer as if asked from that spot. For other models it falls back to country, state or city, which we flag in reports so nobody assumes coordinate precision where it does not exist. Coordinate targeting is available on Business, Agency Scale and Enterprise.
Plan choice therefore matters when you scope a program. Essential ($95/mo) and Professional ($245/mo) are country-level. Agency plans (Kick-off $199/mo, Growth $399/mo, Scale $799/mo) include state and city tracking, unlimited projects, unlimited prompts and 10 seats, and Scale adds coordinate targeting. For a multi-client local program, we find the agency plans the practical fit.
Around location, the platform gives us what we need to make the data useful: a heatmap that compares any two dimensions (countries against models, for instance), citation analytics showing which local sources get cited, IP-verified crawler logs to check bot access to location pages, and visitor analytics with conversions for AI-referred visits.
How we run a location program
Pick the locations that matter. Not every outlet needs its own monitor. We rank locations by revenue and by competition, then start with the top group.
Write local prompts per area. Same intent, localized phrasing, plus neighbourhood and landmark variants where it makes sense.
Baseline for two weeks. Daily runs, compare visibility and position in answer by location.
Read the citations. For each weak location, we list the cited sources: directories, review sites, local news, forums. The gap is often an incomplete or inconsistent listing, not a lack of content.
Fix location pages and listings. Clear, specific pages for each location with real details: services, hours, address, staff. We check crawler logs to confirm bots can fetch them.
Re-measure. We look at visibility by location, citation changes and AI-referred conversions.
Honest limits
Coordinate-level tracking tells you what a model said when asked from a particular spot. It does not mean every customer sees that answer. Personalization, device and model version all play a role. We tell clients that these numbers show direction and comparison between locations, not a promised ranking. We also tell them that no software can guarantee a local recommendation.
Pure local-grid tools such as Local Falcon and local SEO suites such as BrightLocal are worth knowing. They are strong on maps-style local reporting, and some agencies use them alongside an AI visibility platform. In our experience they stop short of crawler logs and AI-referred conversion tracking, which is why they are a complement and not our core tool.
Choosing yourself
Decide your level first. If country-level is enough, a lower plan on any serious platform will do. If you need cities, check which plan includes them, because gating varies. If you need coordinates, confirm which engines respect them. Promptwatch's free Explore plan (10 prompts, ChatGPT only) lets you see how a localized answer looks before you commit to a program.
