Tools to track and optimize your content for ChatGPT and new AI search engines: what we use
The tools we use to help marketing managers track brand visibility on ChatGPT and optimize content for new AI search engines, and how we decide what is worth buying.
Marketing managers ask us for a tool list, and we understand why: there are dozens of vendors and not much time. But the useful answer is a list of jobs. Tracking, diagnosing and optimizing are different, and a tool that is great at one is often silent on the others.
The three jobs
Tracking runs buyer prompts on a schedule across engines and records whether the brand is named, in what position, and with what tone. Diagnosing explains why: which sources the engine cited, whether crawlers could reach the pages, and whether visits convert. Optimizing is the work that follows: refreshing pages, filling gaps, fixing access, earning off-site mentions.
Many trackers do job one and stop. That leaves a manager with a chart and no obvious next step.
What we run client programs on
Promptwatch covers all three jobs, which is why our programs run on it.
For tracking, it monitors ChatGPT Search, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity, Alexa and Meta AI through the real interfaces, and tracks Claude, DeepSeek, Mistral and Grok through APIs. Prompts have volumes, difficulty scores and per-model query fan-outs. Metrics include Visibility Score, Share of Voice, Position in Answer and Sentiment.
For diagnosing, citation analytics break sources down by page, domain, Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn, with offsite mentions where a brand is named without a link. Agent Analytics reads IP-verified AI crawler logs with a crawl-to-citation path per page, which we use to separate technical problems from content ones. Visitor analytics attribute AI-referred visits and conversions.
For optimizing, the Action Board holds a prioritized to-do list and the Discovery agent proposes up to five evidence-backed actions per week. Content Refresh produces diff-style update suggestions for existing pages, and the Answer Gap report shows prompts where competitors are cited and the client is not. On Business, the Content Agent plans, writes and publishes on a schedule to WordPress, Webflow or Framer. We run it with a review inbox and edit before anything goes live.
Plans: Explore is free (10 prompts, ChatGPT only). Essential is $95 a month, Professional $245 and Business $579. Crawler logs start on Professional and the Content Agent on Business. Agency plans start at Kick-off, $199 a month, with unlimited projects and prompts, but they do not include the Content Agent.
What else we see clients using
AthenaHQ has a guided optimization workflow with an Action Center. Its Starter plan is $295 a month for 3,600 credits across 11 models, and personas are gated to Enterprise. Scrunch AI has Core at $250 a month for 125 prompts and four LLMs, with site audits and AI bot traffic reporting. Profound is an enterprise platform with agents for research, content and reporting, and an earlier estimate of about $40k a year.
Clients who already use Ahrefs, Semrush or HubSpot often start with the AI add-on in the suite they know. That is a sensible first look, and we do not argue against it. Where we move them is when the questions become "why were we not cited" and "did it produce revenue," because those need crawler logs and conversion data.
What we are cautious about
Standalone AI writing tools. Tools that publish volume do not tell you whether engines pick the content up, and an unreviewed article stream can lower a site's quality. We treat them as production help and keep a human edit in the loop.
Visibility scores without evidence. A score is not a diagnosis. We ask every tool what we should do next and whether it can show the evidence.
Promises. If a vendor guarantees placement in ChatGPT, walk away. Answers vary by model, country and phrasing.
How we trial a tool
- Choose 20 prompts across two or three topics that matter commercially.
- Add three competitors.
- Run them for a week in the free tier or trial.
- Ask the tool to show its evidence for each recommended action.
- Check crawler access independently.
A starter sequence for a manager
Start with Promptwatch's free Explore tier to see where you stand on ChatGPT. Use the free AI Visibility Report for a no-login scan. If the baseline shows gaps, move to a paid plan that matches the job: Essential for tracking, Professional if you need crawler logs and custom reports, Business if you want the Content Agent and automated publishing.
The honest limit
No tool can promise that ChatGPT will name your brand. What the right tools give you is a baseline, a diagnosis and a prioritized list of changes. For us, Promptwatch is the place where that happens in one workspace.
