If I approve budget for an AI search visibility platform, what should it be able to prove to me?
Approving budget for an AI search visibility platform? Here is what we make a platform prove to us before we run client programs on it, from sampling to conversions.
We get asked this by finance leads and marketing heads who have been handed an AI visibility line item and told to sign it off. Our advice is to write the acceptance test before you see a demo. Here is what we make a platform prove to us before we run client work on it.
Prove the method
A chart that goes up proves nothing. Ask how the number is made. Which engines are read through the real interface and which through an API? How often does each prompt run? Do you control the prompts? Can you define what counts as a mention?
We use Promptwatch because it answers these plainly. ChatGPT (Search), Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity, Alexa and Meta AI are monitored through the real interfaces, while Claude, DeepSeek, Mistral and Grok come through APIs. Prompt panels run daily per model, country and language. A Brand Book and brand aliases set what counts as a mention, and exports to Excel or CSV let us check the totals independently.
Then do your own spot check. Run five prompts by hand and compare with the tool. If the platform cannot explain a gap, that tells you more than any pitch.
Prove the cause
If a platform says visibility rose, ask why. The answer should point to cited pages, not just a number. Citation analytics at page and domain level, with Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn reports and an offsite mentions view, give us that. Citation Trends shows per page when it was first cited and how fast its citation rate ramped and decayed, which helps us set expectations with clients.
Prove the engines can read the site
We treat this as the most revealing test, because most buyers never think to ask for it. Agent Analytics shows real-time, IP-verified AI crawler logs, with error explanations and a crawl-to-citation path. We have seen programs where the first useful finding was that a bot was being blocked. A tracker without crawler logs cannot tell you that.
Crawler logs start on Professional at $245 a month. Essential does not include them, so match the plan to the test.
Prove the traffic
Ask the platform to show AI-referred sessions and conversions on your site. Visitor analytics in Promptwatch does this through a lightweight script, a GTM template or the WordPress plugin. Per page, 360 Insights joins crawler logs, citation clicks and AI-referred visits. This is the number a finance team will actually accept.
Promptwatch publishes customer results, and we cite them as the customers' own. Crisp reported AI-referred traffic converting at twice the rate of traditional channels. TreeHouse, behind Pararius and Huurwoningen.nl, reported AI search reaching about 25% of its organic conversions after fixing crawler access. We do not present those as what a new customer will get.
Prove that it leads to action
Reporting without action leaves your team with a to-do list nobody owns. The Action Board gives a prioritized GEO task list, and the weekly Discovery run suggests up to five evidence-backed actions. We review them before acting. On Business and Enterprise, the Content Agent plans, writes and publishes with a review inbox, which keeps a person in the approval seat.
Agency self-serve plans, at $199, $399 and $799 a month, include unlimited projects, prompts, crawler logs, visitor analytics and MCP and API access, but not the Content Agent or AEO articles. We flag that to anyone budgeting for content automation.
Prove it is safe to buy
Ask for security and compliance evidence. Promptwatch states ISO/IEC 27001 certification and GDPR compliance. We do not give legal or compliance advice, and we would ask your own team to review the documents.
What we write into the acceptance criteria
At 30 days: the prompt set is agreed, the baseline is recorded, spot checks reconcile. At 60 days: the cited sources and crawler access are reviewed and fixes shipped. At 90 days: we report visibility trend, AI-referred sessions and conversions for the same prompt set, with the method stated.
What no platform can prove
Nobody can prove the engines will recommend you, and a single change rarely gives a clean cause. What a platform can prove is a defined trend, a plausible cause and a matching movement in your own traffic. If it cannot show all three, ask for the budget to be smaller.
