Is there a way to get real-time alerts when an AI like ChatGPT mentions my brand?
Real-time alerts for AI mentions do not really exist. We explain what daily monitoring, Slack briefings and live crawler logs can do instead, and how we set them up.
Clients ask this because they are used to news and social alerts that fire when someone writes their name. AI answers do not work that way, and it is better to say so plainly at the start.
Why there is no live mention feed
A ChatGPT answer is generated privately for one person. There is no public stream of those answers to search. So every AI monitoring tool works by sampling: it runs a fixed set of prompts on a schedule, records who is named and compares against the previous run. A tool that says it alerts you on "every mention" is describing its own sample, not all conversations.
That is not a weakness to hide. It just changes what "alerts" should mean in practice.
What we set up instead
On client programs we run Promptwatch, and we build a monitoring rhythm out of four things.
Daily prompt panels. Promptwatch runs the panel daily per model, country and language. That means a shift in Visibility Score, Share of Voice, Position in Answer or Sentiment shows up the following day at the earliest. It is near-daily, not live, and we tell clients that.
A weekly rhythm. The Action Board has a Discovery agent that investigates the data weekly and suggests up to five evidence-backed actions per run, with a weekly digest email. We also use Agent Chat's Scheduled Chats, which can be delivered in-app or in Slack, for a recurring briefing such as a 7-day GEO summary. For clients who like a document, scheduled PDF reports go out on a set day. Slack briefings are not available on white-label workspaces, which matters for some agency setups.
Quota alerts. Promptwatch warns at 85 percent of a usage quota, so a client does not silently run out of prompts or responses mid-month.
Crawler logs as the fast signal. This is the closest thing to live. Agent Analytics shows IP-verified AI crawler logs in real time. A fetch from ChatGPT-User or Perplexity-User means an assistant was reading that page, likely for a person's request. Crawler logs start on the Professional plan ($245 a month), not on Essential, which is worth knowing before you plan around them.
When a client wants real alerts
If a team wants notifications into its own tools, Promptwatch offers a hosted MCP server (110+ read and write tools) and REST API v2 with scoped API keys. We have built simple internal reports on top of that data. We do not describe this as a mention pager, because it is not one: it pulls scheduled data from a monitor that runs on its own cadence.
What we tell clients to watch for
Single-day changes are noise. Answers vary between runs, and an engine can swap one brand for another in the list without any real shift. We set a rule: act on a sustained change over a week or two, not on one data point. Sudden changes that line up with a crawler error spike or a site change are the exception, and those are worth checking the same day.
What to ask any vendor
If real-time alerts are your priority, ask three questions. How often does the tool run prompts? What actually triggers a notification? Does it query the real interface of each engine or an API? Then ask for a live example of a notification, not a screenshot of a feature list.
For small teams who just want to know whether things moved, a weekly digest and a monthly report are usually enough. The extra urgency of daily pings tends to produce anxiety more than action.
