Tools to monitor product recommendations in AI assistants

How we monitor product recommendations in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity for client programs, which tools we use and what a product panel should contain.

Product recommendation monitoring is where AI tracking gets close to revenue. A shopper asks an assistant for the best option, gets three names, and moves on. If your client's product is not one of the three, there is no impression to report and no click to attribute.

Here is how we monitor it for client programs and what we have learned about the tooling.

Recommendations are not the same as mentions

A brand mention and a product recommendation are different events. A mention can be neutral or even negative. A recommendation is the assistant saying "choose this one", usually with a reason. We track both, but the second matters more commercially.

So the panel looks different from a general brand panel. We write prompts the way buyers phrase them:

  • Needs-first: "best [product type] for [use case]".
  • Constraint-based: price range, size, team size, region.
  • Head-to-head: "[our product] vs [competitor]".
  • Alternatives: "alternatives to [competitor]".
  • Review-style: "is [product] worth it".

We add persona variants because the same product question phrased by a beginner and by a professional can produce different lists.

Our tooling

Client programs run on Promptwatch. The relevant features, in the order we use them:

Prompt tracking. Prompts are typed as organic, brand or competitor comparison, grouped by topic and persona (persona stacking lets you combine them). Daily panels run per model, country and language. Query fan-outs per model show the sub-searches the assistant ran, which often reveal the attributes it is filtering products on.

Competitor visibility. Share of voice, position and heatmaps against named competitors tell us which rival keeps taking the recommendation, and on which prompts.

Citation analytics. This is the most useful view for product work. When an assistant recommends a competitor, we look at which pages it cited. Frequently it is a comparison article, a forum thread or a video, not the competitor's own site. Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn citation reports break those down. Page Tracker follows specific URLs, ours or theirs.

AI Shopping. This covers ChatGPT shopping carousels and Amazon Alexa product results, with own-catalog upload. Shopping Insights is on the Business plan and above, so scope that when you plan a budget.

Agent Analytics. Crawler logs show whether bots like GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User can reach product pages and where they hit errors. Product pages behind scripts or blocked paths are a quiet cause of missing recommendations. Crawler logs start on Professional.

Visitor analytics. AI-referred visits and conversions, via a script, GTM or the WordPress plugin. This is the only way to show a client that recommendation changes lead anywhere.

Real-interface versus API tracking

We tell clients which engines are checked in the real interface and which through APIs. Promptwatch monitors ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity, Amazon Alexa and Meta AI in real interfaces, while Claude, DeepSeek, Mistral and Grok come through APIs. For shopping, the difference matters because carousels and product cards only appear in real interfaces.

What we do with the findings

  • Fix data first. Make product facts consistent across the site and feeds. Assistants repeat what they find.
  • Close source gaps. If review sites decide the recommendation, we work on being included there.
  • Refresh product pages. Content Refresh gives diff-style update suggestions for existing pages. We keep human review in the loop.
  • Create comparison content. For prompts like "X vs Y" we draft pages from a brief and review them before publishing.
  • Work the Action Board. It produces a prioritized list from the data, which keeps the weekly meeting short.

Other tools clients ask about

AthenaHQ is a GEO platform with an Action Center and credit-based usage. Scrunch AI pairs monitoring with audits. Profound targets enterprise marketing teams. Ranketta and Siftly focus on product-level and shopping use cases. Semrush and Ahrefs offer AI add-ons for existing users. Otterly.AI and Peec AI are simple prompt monitors.

We reach for Promptwatch because tracking, citations, crawl access and conversions are in one place, which means fewer exports and fewer arguments about whose number is right.

Limits worth stating

No tool can guarantee a recommendation, and answers vary between runs. We treat any one-day change with suspicion and look at weeks of data. A recommendation panel tells you where you stand and which levers exist. It does not pull them for you.
