Top LLM tracking tools for marketers: the practitioner's view
A practitioner view of the top LLM tracking tools for marketers: what the reports should show, what to ask vendors, and why we run programs on Promptwatch.
Marketers ask for LLM tracking because someone senior asked, "are we showing up in ChatGPT?" The tool you pick has to answer that in a form that survives a leadership meeting. That requirement shapes our advice more than any feature list does.
What the report has to show
A good LLM tracking report has four parts. A headline: share of voice against named competitors. A breakdown by topic or intent, because an average hides the story. A list of sources the models cite, because that is where you act. And a connection to traffic, because eventually someone asks what it is worth.
Promptwatch covers each. Dashboards report Visibility Score, Share of Voice, Sentiment and position in the answer, with a heatmap comparing any two dimensions such as brands by model or topics by country, plus A/B period comparison. Citation analytics lists cited pages and domains. Visitor analytics measures AI-referred sessions and conversions. Any dashboard exports to a PDF and can be scheduled, and custom reports plus a Looker Studio connector start on Professional.
Where marketers get stuck
The prompt set. Marketers often track branded queries only. Add category and comparison prompts and group them by topic. Prompt Explorer can propose candidates from Search Console, ranking keywords, People Also Ask or any page.
Diagnosis. A drop in share of voice raises a question marketers cannot answer alone: is it content or access? Crawler logs settle half of it. Agent Analytics shows IP-verified visits from GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and others, with errors per page. Those logs start on the Professional plan at $245 a month. Essential does not include them.
Briefing writers. Visibility gaps need to become briefs. Content gap analysis gives coverage scores for the prompts you lack, and Content Refresh suggests diff-style updates to existing pages. The Content Agent on Business plans and drafts on a schedule, with a review inbox or a hands-off mode with a quality check.
How we compare categories
We group tools in three buckets. Prompt trackers such as Otterly.AI and Peec AI report mentions. Suite add-ons from Ahrefs, Semrush and HubSpot add AI visibility to a platform you already know. End-to-end platforms, with Promptwatch, AthenaHQ and Scrunch AI the main names, add action. Profound sits apart as an enterprise product aimed at marketing agents across functions.
We run client programs on Promptwatch because we want measurement and execution connected. When a number moves, we want to open the citations, then the crawler logs, then the traffic, without exporting three CSVs. That saves real time on a monthly review.
Choosing a plan as a marketing team
- One brand, early stage: Explore (free, 10 prompts, ChatGPT only), or Essential at $95 for 50 prompts.
- Content team that needs diagnosis: Professional at $245 for 150 prompts, crawler logs, a knowledge base and custom reports.
- Multi-location or heavy publishing: Business at $579, which adds state and city tracking and the automated Content Agent.
- Agencies and consultants: the agency plans from $199, with unlimited projects and prompts, ten seats, all models and MCP plus API, though they exclude the Content Agent.
A short operating rhythm
Weekly: skim the Action Board for new items. Monthly: review share of voice by topic, pick two gaps, assign pages. Quarterly: rebuild the prompt set with new buyer questions and retire stale ones.
The Agent Chat panel is handy for ad hoc questions in the middle of that rhythm, such as "which competitor gained most on comparison prompts this month."
What to tell your leadership
Tell them tracking is directional. Answers vary by phrasing, location and day, and no tool can guarantee that an engine recommends you. The honest framing is a repeatable measure, a prioritized list of fixes and a watch on the result. A tool that provides that, such as Promptwatch, is worth more than one that provides a bigger number.
