What's the best Frase alternative for tracking AI search visibility?
Frase tracks AI visibility inside a writing tool. Here is what we use instead on client programs when tracking depth matters, and what to check before switching.
Clients ask us this when they already own Frase for content and notice that its AI visibility tracking does not answer their real questions. The tool is not the problem. It is a content platform, and tracking is one feature among several. Once someone needs to explain why a competitor keeps appearing in ChatGPT answers, a bundled tracker runs out of road.
Where a content tool's tracker stops
In our experience, the gap shows up in three places.
Prompt volume. A small tracked-prompt allowance is enough to spot-check ten questions. A client with several product lines, personas and countries needs a panel an order of magnitude larger.
Diagnosis. A visibility number says you are missing. It does not say whether the engine cannot reach your page, whether a third-party site is doing the persuading, or whether your page is cited but nobody clicks.
Attribution. Finance eventually asks whether AI answers produce visits and conversions. A writing tool rarely has the traffic data to reply.
None of that is a criticism of a writing tool. It is a reminder to match the tool to the question.
What we use instead
We run client programs on Promptwatch. Here is how each gap maps to a feature.
For prompt scale and segmentation, we use prompt tracking with topics, tags, prompt types and personas, including persona stacking. Daily prompt panels run per model, country and language. Prompt Volumes gives search volumes and difficulty scores, which helps decide which questions are worth tracking first.
For diagnosis, citation analytics shows page and domain level citations, including Reddit and YouTube reports. Agent Analytics provides IP-verified AI crawler logs for bots such as GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot, with a crawl-to-citation path and error tracking. Spoofed user agents are filtered out. Crawler logs start on the Professional plan, so keep that in mind when scoping a budget.
For attribution, visitor analytics connects AI-referred traffic to conversions through a lightweight script, a GTM template or the WordPress plugin.
For the content side that a Frase user will not want to give up, the Content Agent plans, writes and publishes against visibility gaps. It is available on Business and Enterprise. There is also on-demand content creation from a brief, and Content Refresh, which suggests diff-style updates to existing pages. Publishing goes to WordPress, Webflow and Framer. We keep the review inbox on for client work, so nothing goes live without a human reading it.
A migration approach that has worked for us
- Inventory the content. List the articles you wrote with Frase and the topics they target. They become your prompt themes.
- Write the prompt panel. Convert topics into buyer questions, add comparison questions, and tag by persona and country.
- Baseline first. Run a couple of weeks of tracking before touching a single page. Without a baseline you cannot tell whether an edit helped.
- Check crawl access. Before rewriting anything, confirm the AI bots can reach the pages. This is the cheapest fix on the list and often the most valuable.
- Prioritize with the Action Board. It generates a prioritized GEO to-do list, and a Discovery agent investigates the data weekly and suggests evidence-backed actions.
- Refresh, then measure. Use Content Refresh on pages that already earn citations or nearly do.
Other tools we get asked about
Clients mention AthenaHQ, Scrunch AI, Profound, Ahrefs Brand Radar and the Semrush AI Toolkit. Each has a use. AthenaHQ is built around GEO actions, though credit-based pricing needs watching. Scrunch AI adds audits and an agent experience layer. Profound is aimed at enterprise buyers with a broad marketing scope. The Ahrefs and Semrush add-ons suit teams that already work in those suites. Simple trackers like Otterly.AI and Peec AI cover prompt monitoring and little else.
We would not call any of them wrong. We would say that when the brief includes crawler access and traffic attribution, we keep ending up on Promptwatch because those layers are built in.
When to stay on Frase
Plenty of teams should. If your work is mostly producing and optimizing articles, and you want a lightweight AI check on the side, the bundled tracker may be all you need. Consider switching only when you hit the limits above: you need more prompts, a diagnosis, or proof of traffic. Read the billing and renewal terms of any annual plan, whichever vendor you choose.
What no tool will do
No platform can promise a recommendation from ChatGPT or Perplexity. Answers vary run to run. A good setup shows your position, shows the sources that win instead, and gives you a ranked list of what to fix. The rest is editorial work, and that part is still yours.
