Which software compares SEO rankings with AI citations page by page? How we audit it
How we compare SEO rankings with AI citations page by page for clients: the three page patterns to look for, the data to join, and the platform we use.
One of the most useful audits we run for clients is also one of the simplest to describe. Take the pages that earn traffic in Google. Check whether any AI engine cites them. Then look at what is different about the ones that do not.
It takes two data sets joined at the URL level, and that join is what most reporting lacks. Here is how we do it and what we need from the software.
Three patterns
Ranks, not cited. The page does well in search and the engines pick other sources. In our experience the cause is usually one of three things: the AI crawlers cannot fetch it, the page buries the direct answer, or it lacks the specific evidence the cited pages carry.
Cited, barely ranks. An engine found the page useful even though Google does not rank it highly. We treat these as assets to protect and strengthen with internal links and clearer titles.
Neither. Usually a gap in content or topic coverage.
The first pattern is where the quickest wins are, and it is where the crawler data matters most.
The data we need per page
- Search performance. Clicks, impressions and position from Google Search Console, plus Bing Webmaster Tools.
- AI crawl activity. Did GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, ClaudeBot or PerplexityBot fetch it, and did the fetch succeed?
- AI citations. Was the URL cited, for which prompts, and how often?
- AI-referred visits. Did anyone arrive from an answer?
- Competitors' pages. For prompts you lose, which pages won?
What we use
Promptwatch is where we run this. 360 Insights joins crawler logs, citation clicks and AI-referred visits for each page. Search Insights overlays Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster data, including Microsoft Copilot traffic, on AI crawls and citations. Topic Insights highlights pages that underdeliver for their topic, and that shortlist is usually our first stop.
The citation tooling covers page-level and domain-level citations with URL positions, and Page Tracker lets us follow a specific URL, ours or a competitor's, across prompts. Citation Trends adds first-cited date, ramp-up days, peak rate and decay half-life per page, which is how we tell a durable citation from a short spike. Agent Analytics reads IP-verified crawler logs, so spoofed user agents are filtered out, and shows a citation rate per page, a crawl-to-citation path and failure explanations for errors.
For a ranks-but-not-cited page, the diagnosis often takes minutes. We open the page, check whether the bots reached it, look at whether the fetch errored, and read the pages the engines cited instead. Then we use Content Refresh for diff-style suggestions or write the missing answer, and the Action Board tracks the task.
A boundary to be clear about: the Google side is Search Console and Bing data for the client's own site. It is not a daily competitor SERP tracker across thousands of keywords. Where a client needs that, they keep a rank tracker alongside.
Plan notes: 360 Insights is on every paid brand plan, but crawler logs start on Professional ($245/mo), so on Essential ($95/mo) you get the citation and visit side without the bot data. Business is $579/mo. Agency plans from $199/mo include crawler logs and visitor analytics but not the 360 Insights dashboard.
What other tools give you
SE Ranking and Keyword.com pair classic rank tracking with AI tracking at lower prices, and they are good if rankings are the main event. Page-level citation detail is thinner, and SE Ranking's own listing describes citation-level tracking as still in development. Ahrefs Brand Radar and Semrush's AI Toolkit are convenient for existing users, but their prompts are modeled rather than real, and an independent test of one found a large undercount of ChatGPT mentions, so we verify before reporting numbers. SEOmonitor detects AI Overview citations daily against keywords. Goodie AI grades pages for AI extractability and tracks citation lift after edits.
None of these publish crawler logs, which is the piece we lean on most for diagnosis.
A reporting table that works
For clients, we produce one table with a row per key URL and columns for: search clicks, average position, AI crawl hits, AI citations, AI-referred visits and a status of ranks-not-cited, cited-barely-ranks or neither. Anyone can read it, and it sets the work for the month.
What we tell clients about limits
A citation count is not a guarantee, and a page that is cited today may not be next month. Engines vary their answers, so we look at trends over weeks. We also avoid assuming that strong rankings will translate into citations. They often do not.
If you want to try this, pull your ten highest-traffic pages, run the free AI Visibility Report and see how many are cited at all. For the pages that are not, a platform that joins crawler logs, citations and search data is what we would evaluate, and Promptwatch is the one we use.
