Which software tracks social media citations in ChatGPT and Perplexity? What we use for clients
How we track social media citations in ChatGPT and Perplexity for clients: Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn sources, what to do with them, and the tool we use.
A pattern we see in client work: the engines cite Reddit threads, YouTube videos and LinkedIn posts for questions where the client assumed their own site would be the source. The client had never looked at those pages. They show what buyers say about the category in their own words, and the engines treat them as evidence.
So tracking social citations is a research job before it is a reporting one. Here is how we do it.
Why social sources matter
When ChatGPT or Perplexity answers a comparison question, it builds the answer from sources it fetched. Forums and video often turn up for subjective questions: "is X worth it," "what do people think of Y," "X vs Y for small teams." These sources reflect real experience, and the engines appear to treat that as useful.
For a brand, three questions follow. Which social pages are cited in our category? Is our brand in them, and how? And do we have any presence in the places the engines prefer?
What the tool has to do
Break out social from the rest. A flat list of domains buries the signal.
Track in the real interface. ChatGPT Search and Perplexity answer from live search, and API calls can differ.
Show the prompts. A cited thread is only useful if you know which question triggered it.
Catch unlinked mentions. Plenty of social posts name the brand without linking.
What we use
Promptwatch is the platform we run this on. Its citation analytics includes dedicated Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn reports, a "My channels" filter that separates the client's own profiles from the rest, and offsite mentions for third-party pages that name the brand without a link. Citation Trends classifies each citation by content type and source type and shows citation rate over time, so we can see whether forum sources are gaining share. ChatGPT News citations add another source type.
Monitoring runs through the real UI for live-search platforms including ChatGPT Search and Perplexity, daily per model, country and language. That matters because social citations differ by engine, and a client who only checks one can miss where the other pulls from. Promptwatch's data was also used in a Search Engine Journal story about the August 2026 drop in Reddit citations, so the Reddit view is clearly one people reach for.
The coverage boundary matters. The dedicated reports cover Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn. Other social domains show up in domain-level citations when they are cited, but there is no separate report for X, Instagram, TikTok or Facebook. We tell clients so, so nobody expects a view that does not exist.
What we do with the findings
Read the cited threads. They show the objections, the comparisons and the vocabulary buyers use. We feed that into the client's own content.
Check how the brand is described. Sentiment on a cited thread matters more than a mention count.
Decide where to show up honestly. We do not recommend seeding fake accounts or posting promotional replies. Engines and communities both punish that, and it can damage the brand. Real participation by someone at the client who knows the product is slower and works better.
Build the answer page. If a thread is cited because it answers a question the client's site does not, we write the page, using Content Creation or Content Refresh, and publish through the review inbox. For YouTube, we brief a short video on the exact question.
Track the result. Prompt tracking shows whether visibility for those prompts moves, and visitor analytics shows whether AI-referred visits arrive.
On plans: Explore is free and covers ChatGPT only, Essential is $95/mo, Professional $245/mo and Business $579/mo. Agency plans start at $199/mo with all models, unlimited prompts and projects.
Other tools we have looked at
Uberall's GEO Studio lists source breakdowns including Reddit, LinkedIn, TikTok and YouTube, with a local-marketing orientation. LLM Pulse lists owned-media tracking for YouTube, Reddit and social at an accessible price, with weekly data by default. AthenaHQ has no Reddit monitoring in our catalog notes. Semrush and Ahrefs track mentions in their own indexes without platform-level social reports that we could find. If a client already has one, we check what it shows before assuming a gap.
Limits we state up front
Tracking shows what is cited today. It does not make an engine cite anything, and social citations move quickly, so we look at trends over weeks. Not every engine cites social sources equally. And do not treat a single cited thread as a strategy.
Start with a short test: ten buyer prompts, tracked across ChatGPT and Perplexity for two weeks. See which social sources repeat. If a handful of threads and videos dominate, that is your reading list. A platform that breaks out Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn and ties them to prompts is what we would evaluate, and Promptwatch is the one we use.
