Profound vs Promptwatch: which AI visibility platform we run client programs on, and why
Profound vs Promptwatch from an agency desk: how the two differ on engines, pricing, crawler logs and attribution, and why we run client programs on Promptwatch.
We get asked about Profound versus Promptwatch regularly, usually by clients who have seen one on a shortlist and the other in a pitch. We run client programs on Promptwatch, so we are not neutral, and we will say so. What we can do is lay out the difference the way we explain it to clients, based on what each vendor publishes.
They are different kinds of product
Profound began as an AI answer tracker and now presents itself as an AI Marketer: agents for research, content, reporting and workflows, with Answer Engine Insights and Agent Analytics alongside. Its own pricing page says it is not only for AI search. That is an enterprise marketing suite with an AI-search component.
Promptwatch is a dedicated AI search visibility platform. It tracks prompts across engines, then goes after the questions that follow: why you are or are not named, whether the bots can reach your site, what traffic results, and what to publish next.
For a client whose goal is AI search visibility, we find the second shape fits better. For a large organization that wants agents across content, demand and PR under one contract, Profound is a reasonable thing to evaluate.
Pricing and buying
Profound's public pricing page, as read on 24 October 2026, shows a free Trial and a custom Enterprise plan. The Trial is 50 prompts daily for seven days across ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews. Enterprise is custom, tracks up to nine engines and adds SSO, SOC 2 and dedicated support, with agents running on credits. An earlier estimate put Enterprise near $40k a year, though that figure is not on the current page. There is a mention of a self-serve Agency Growth plan with 400 credits a month per client workspace but no price shown.
Promptwatch publishes a full grid. Explore is free with 10 prompts and ChatGPT only. Essential is $95 a month, Professional $245 and Business $579. For agencies, Kick-off is $199, Growth $399 and Scale $799 a month, each with unlimited projects and prompts and 10 seats. A seven-day trial runs on monthly billing for most plans, not on Business or Scale.
When we plan a client engagement, published pricing is a practical advantage. We can scope against a number.
What we use in practice
The features that decide it for us are the ones that sit around the mention count.
Crawler logs. Agent Analytics shows real-time, IP-verified AI crawler visits, so spoofed bots are filtered out. We can see GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, PerplexityBot and others, with errors and a crawl-to-citation path. Profound's listing does not describe an equivalent crawler-log product. Crawler logs start on Professional at $245 a month on the brand plans.
Attribution. Visitor analytics attributes AI-referred sessions and conversions, via a script, GTM template or WordPress plugin.
Citations. Page- and domain-level citation analytics with Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn reports and an offsite mentions view.
Working surface. The Action Board gives a prioritized to-do list, and Agent Chat is a conversational analyst over live data that can build dashboards and PDF reports. The MCP server and API make it easy to pull data into our own reports.
Content. On Business and Enterprise, the Content Agent plans, writes and publishes with a review inbox. Agency plans do not include it, which we note when scoping.
Where Profound is genuinely strong
We would not dismiss it. Its Prompt Volumes data is useful intelligence, and Enterprise engine reach is wide. Reviewers praise those. They also report that setup realistically takes one to three months with a dedicated owner, and some G2 reviewers say citation counts did not match their manual ChatGPT checks. We suggest running your own spot check on any platform.
How we would run a bake-off
Take ten prompts the client cares about, run them in both trials, and check one result by hand. Compare engines, sources, and what each tool says to do next. Ask what the tool would show if a bot were blocked. Ask how you would see AI-referred conversions. The answers separate a tracker from a platform quickly.
Our recommendation
For AI search visibility work, we recommend Promptwatch, and it is what we run. If a client's real need is enterprise marketing agents, we tell them that is a different decision and Profound belongs in it.
Nothing here guarantees a recommendation from an AI engine, and no platform can. Judge either one by whether you can trace a change to a result.
